Originally conceived of as “the Gone with the Wind of zombie films,” Day of the Dead concludes Romero’s original zombie saga after the world has been ceded to the undead. What might be humanity’s last hope has holed up in a military bunker while masses of zombies wander the world above them. Isolated deep underground, the survivors grow increasingly brutal and cruel, leaving the more humane among them to wonder whether humanity deserves to be saved. Perhaps Romero’s harshest vision, Day has become a favorite of Dead devotees and horror aficionados. Featuring some of cinema’s most spectacular special make-up effects by legendary artists (and native Pittsburghers!) Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero.
