Veteran Chinese director Feng Xiaogang's latest film is a follow-up to I Am Not Madame Bovary. Set in a military art troupe in 1970s China, this coming-of-age story is about young people making peace with the past and making the most of the present. Youth chronicles the joys and travails of a provincial military-arts troupe and unlikely heroine He Xiaoping (Miao Miao); soldiers in the People's Liberation Army whose duty it is to promote culture, revolutionary values, music, and dance. “Tracking the tempestuous fates of a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) dance troupe from the Cultural Revolution to the ’90s, the film serves as a paean to idealism and endurance, yet the word “heart-breaking” comes to mind scene after scene.” - Variety
