At the forefront of the late-2000s wave of “found footage” horror movies, Diary of the Dead fins Romero revisiting the very beginnings of the zombie apocalypse through the cameras and social media screens of the 21st century. A group of University of Pittsburgh film students are shooting a horror movie in the woods when news of violent riots and mass murder starts spreading. As they rush back to what remains of civilization, they realize that the unthinkable has happened: the dead are coming back to life, and they’re hungry for the flesh of the living. An incisive, scary, and often hilarious reflection on the horror genre and our iPhone-era compulsion to live our own lives through a viewfinder.
