In this captivating coming-of-age drama, a tomboyish preteen boxer (played by newcomer Royalty Hightower) is drawn to the female empowerment of the drill team that practices in the same rec center in Cincinnati’s West End where she trains. To her this is an intoxicating new world. Shortly after she joins the team, the captain faints during practice. Then others on the team begin to faint, moan, and shake in a seemingly uncontrollable catharsis. Pretty soon all the girls embrace these mysterious spasms, turning them into a rite of passage. “The Fits” is a meditation on gender and self-discovery, distinguished by the first-time director’s visual storytelling. Its dreamy beauty, moody music, and strong performances make this an unforgettable film experience.
